FAQs
Home Improvement — what people ask
Personal loan vs HELOC — which is better for a remodel?
Personal loans fund in days, no collateral, fixed rate, but cap around $50–100k. HELOCs require equity and an appraisal but offer larger limits and lower rates. Use a personal loan for $5–25k jobs, HELOC for $35k+.
How much equity do I need for a HELOC?
Most lenders require at least 15–20% equity (i.e., LTV under 80–85%). Figure goes up to 85% LTV; some banks stop at 80%.
Can I deduct home improvement loan interest?
HELOC and home equity loan interest is tax-deductible if used to buy, build, or substantially improve the home that secures the loan (post-TCJA rules). Personal loan interest used for home improvement is generally not deductible. Confirm with a tax pro.
How fast can I get the money?
LightStream and SoFi unsecured loans fund as fast as same day. Figure HELOC funds in about 5 business days. Traditional bank HELOCs take 3–6 weeks.
Should I use my credit card instead?
Only for sub-$3k projects you can pay off in the 0% intro window of a balance-transfer card. Above that, a personal loan or HELOC will almost always be cheaper.
